My boys is back just in time for summer. They got something for you:
i love Dead Prez for they commitment to principle.
Since their 2000 debut album, “Let’s Get Free,” Dead Prez (“Dead Prez means dead the muh’fuckin president”), with their unwavering dedication to Black liberation in a perfected blend of political commentary and lyrical hotness, have been hassled and harassed by all the major record labels in the game.
This hasn’t stopped them, however, from releasing a slew of albums, including three mixtapes entitled “Turn off the Radio.” The first mixtape’s title track speaks clearly to how they feel on the matter: “you’ve been blackballed. what? nigga take these black balls…in your mouth!”
With lyrics such as “i don’t believe Bob Marley died from cancer/31 years ago i would’ve been a panther/you killed huey cause you knew he had the answer/the views that you see in the news in motherfuckin propoganda,” “Democrats and Republicans/just two sides of the same coin/either way it’s still white power/it’s the same system just changed form,” and “Everywhere the white man go he bring misery/all throughout history/look it up/ Everything them bald heads touch, they fuck it up/every government they set up/it be corrupt,” Dead Prez fills a devestating void: politically minded lyricism that provides a soundtrack to our struggle.
And of course, these cats ain’t just a couple of stone cold revolutionaries impervious to the splendors of life. Joints like “Mind Sex,” “Happiness,” “Be Healthy,” and “Real Black Girl (Revolutionary Love)” etch a smile into the coldest ice grill. Ultiamtely, Dead Prez is a well-rounded duo, devoted to their ideals, and committed to African people. That’s a rare thing to come by nowadays when most cats is “…dying over streets we don’t even own anyway/you can get bucked off any day/we behind enemy lines.”
Dead Prez and DJ Green Lantern: Pulse of the People, Turn off the Radio Mixtape, Vol. 3, in stores June 23rd.
